5 Things the Research Says About Cell Phone Radiation and Cancer

Most people have never seen this research. I think it is important that they do — so every family can make an educated decision about how to protect themselves, whether that means using our product or simply changing a few free habits.

Bodywell BioChip attached to a phone

The studies cited below were conducted by independent researchers, government agencies, and international organizations. Bodywell did not fund or direct any of the cancer-related research presented on this page.

Why I am writing this

I get calls from mothers who ask me one question: "I have a baby — what do I need to do?" They do not ask me to explain the studies. They do not want a science lecture. They want to know what is real and what they can actually do about it.

I run a company that makes an EMF protection product. You might expect me to tell you that phones cause cancer. I am not going to do that — because the science does not work that way.

Here is what I mean. Imagine someone jumps from the first floor. Do they break their hand? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. But if you run a test and the person does not break their hand, it does not mean jumping is safe. That is how studies work. They answer the exact question you asked — nothing more. A study that did not find one specific type of cancer does not tell you anything about other types of harm.

So instead of waiting for one perfect study to settle the question, I looked at five pieces of research from government agencies, independent scientists, and international health organizations. None of them prove your phone will give you cancer. But taken together, they paint a picture that changed how I think about the devices my family uses every day.

In life, it is about mitigation of risk. That is what this page is about.

Bodywell does not claim to prevent, treat, or cure cancer. We make a product designed to reduce how much EMF your body absorbs from close-contact devices.

Evidence 01

The U.S. Government Spent $30 Million and 10 Years Studying This

The National Toxicology Program study is the most comprehensive RF radiation study ever conducted. It was funded by the U.S. government, ran for a full decade, and cost $30 million.

The researchers exposed rats to RF radiation at levels designed to mimic cell phone use. When the study concluded, the NTP used the strongest language it has: "clear evidence of carcinogenic activity."

The animals developed brain cancer — glioma — and heart cancer — schwannoma. These effects showed up at both lower and higher radiation levels than the official safety limits. The study also confirmed significantly increased DNA strand breaks in the brains of exposed animals.

This was not a startup or a health blog. This was the U.S. government's own research division, using its own highest-confidence language.

And there is a real-world pattern that matches. Studies show a dramatic increase in cancer rates among people under 50. Cancer used to appear mostly in older adults. Today, it is happening in people who are much younger — the generation that grew up with phones in their pockets.

Study
U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP), 2018. Conducted under the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
What they found
"Clear evidence of carcinogenic activity" in male rats. Brain tumors (glioma) and heart tumors (schwannoma) developed at both lower and higher levels than accepted safety limits. Significant DNA strand breaks confirmed in exposed animals' brains.
Why it matters
The strongest language from the U.S. government's own toxicology division — applied to the same type of radiation your phone emits every day.
Important context: This study was conducted on rats, not humans. Animal studies do not prove the same outcome will occur in people. However, the NTP used "clear evidence" — its highest confidence level — specifically because the findings were strong, consistent, and reproducible.

Evidence 02

The World Health Organization's Cancer Agency Classified Cell Phone Radiation

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer — the cancer research arm of the World Health Organization — reviewed the available evidence and classified RF electromagnetic fields as "possibly carcinogenic to humans." That is Group 2B.

Since then, the evidence has continued to accumulate. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have called for RF radiation to be reclassified to "probably carcinogenic" (Group 2A) or even "carcinogenic" (Group 1).

To put Group 2B in perspective: it means there is credible enough evidence of a cancer link that the world's leading cancer research agency decided it could not be dismissed. And that classification was made before the NTP results were published, before the Ramazzini data came in, and before the average person was spending five hours a day on their phone.

Organization
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization. The IARC classifies substances and exposures based on the strength of cancer evidence worldwide.
Classification
RF electromagnetic fields classified as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B) in 2011. Multiple scientists have since called for reclassification to Group 2A ("probably carcinogenic") or Group 1 ("carcinogenic").
Why it matters
The WHO's cancer agency found enough evidence to formally classify cell phone radiation as a possible cancer risk — and the science has only grown stronger since.
Important context: Group 2B means the evidence is limited but credible enough to warrant concern. It does not mean cell phones definitely cause cancer. However, experts who have reviewed the newer data argue the classification should be stronger than it was in 2011.

Evidence 03

Children Absorb Up to 10× More Radiation — and Brain Tumors Are Now Their Deadliest Cancer

This is the one that changed everything for me as a parent.

Children are not small adults. Their skulls are thinner, their brain tissue contains more water, and their heads are smaller. All of that means they absorb significantly more radiation from the same device than a grown man does.

I say it this way: if a doctor prescribed the same dose of medicine to a 200-pound adult and a 10-pound baby, it would be malpractice. It would be criminal. But with radiation exposure, that is exactly what is happening right now. Everyone is exposed to the same level. There is no adjusted limit for children. There is no real guidance.

The official SAR safety limits are measured per kilogram of body weight. A 10-pound infant absorbing the same radiation as a 200-pound adult receives 10 to 20 times the relative dose. It is the same principle as weight-based medication dosing — the same amount does not mean the same exposure.

And here is what makes it worse. A 2025 study tested radiation at levels 4,000 times below the official safety limit — using Bluetooth-level exposure — on human stem cells modeled to represent developing brain tissue in children. Even at that level, it affected DNA. We cannot just wait. We have to protect our kids. We cannot wait for the government to come up with something. It is really our responsibility.

Meanwhile, brain tumors have become the deadliest cancer in children. I am not claiming phones caused that. But I am asking: how can we look at these numbers and not take precautions?

The science
Children absorb up to 10× more RF radiation than adults due to thinner skulls, higher water content in developing brain tissue, and smaller head circumference. SAR is measured per kilogram, so a lighter child receives a proportionally larger dose.
The reality
The average child today uses a phone or tablet for hours every day, starting as young as two or three years old. The original safety test model was a 220-pound adult male using a phone 7 minutes a day.
Why it matters
The people most exposed to cell phone radiation are the ones whose bodies are least equipped to handle it — and their exposure starts younger than ever.
Important context: Brain tumor rates in children are influenced by many factors, including improved diagnostic imaging. The connection between RF exposure and pediatric brain tumors has not been proven in humans. However, the 250+ EMF Scientist Appeal specifically calls for stronger safety standards to protect children and pregnant women.

Evidence 04

A UC Berkeley Researcher Found Significant Risk After Just 17 Minutes a Day

Joel Moskowitz, a researcher at UC Berkeley's School of Public Health, has spent years analyzing the data on cell phone radiation and tumor risk.

His research pointed to a finding that stopped me cold: 17 minutes per day of cell phone use, sustained over 10 years, was associated with a significant increase in tumor risk.

Seventeen minutes. Most people I know use their phones for four or five hours a day. Their kids use tablets for even longer. And these patterns have been going on not for 10 years, but for an entire generation.

This is not a study from a fringe lab. This is UC Berkeley — one of the top research universities in the world.

Researcher
Joel Moskowitz, Ph.D., School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. Director of the Center for Family and Community Health.
Finding
17 minutes per day of phone use for 10 years was associated with a significant increase in tumor risk in the studies Moskowitz analyzed.
Why it matters
Most people exceed 17 minutes before breakfast. The threshold for concern is far lower than what nearly everyone is exposed to today.
Important context: This finding comes from Moskowitz's analysis of multiple epidemiological studies. Epidemiological data shows associations — it does not prove that phones directly caused any individual tumor. But the pattern across studies, at a usage level far below what most people actually do, is worth taking seriously.

Evidence 05

250+ Scientists and a 2025 WHO Review Both Say the Same Thing: No Assurance of Safety

Over 250 scientists from more than 40 countries — all with peer-reviewed publications on electromagnetic fields — signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal. Their joint position: "current limits don't protect children or pregnant women."

Then, in 2025, a peer-reviewed analysis of the WHO's own commissioned systematic reviews on RF health effects was published in the journal Environmental Health. The conclusion was direct: the underlying evidence provides "no assurance of safety."

Read that again. The scientists who reviewed the WHO's own data could not assure the public that current phone use is safe.

These are not activists or bloggers. These are researchers with careers built on publishing evidence in peer-reviewed journals. And they are collectively saying: the standards we are relying on were not built for the way we use phones today.

The appeal
250+ scientists from 40+ countries with peer-reviewed EMF publications signed the International EMF Scientist Appeal at EMFscientist.org, urging the WHO and UN to adopt biologically-based safety standards.
The 2025 review
A 2025 peer-reviewed analysis of WHO-commissioned systematic reviews (DOI: 10.1186/s12940-025-01220-4) published in Environmental Health concluded: "no assurance of safety." The analysis called for stronger guidelines around long-term and childhood exposure.
Why it matters
The world's leading independent scientists and the WHO's own data both point to the same conclusion — current safety standards do not match the way we actually live with our phones.

The free precaution you can start today

Distance Is Your Best Friend

Before I tell you about our product, here is the single most effective thing you can do right now — and it costs nothing.

Distance is your first and best protection. The further your phone is from your body, the less radiation you absorb. That is physics, and no product changes it.

A few habits that make a real difference:

Do not sleep with your phone on your nightstand. Keep it across the room or outside the bedroom entirely.
Use speaker or wired headphones instead of holding the phone to your head.
Keep it off your lap and out of your pocket when possible — even an arm's length away dramatically reduces exposure.
Keep the router out of bedrooms — especially children's rooms and the nursery.

These are free. They work. And you should do them whether or not you ever buy anything from us.

If you want additional precaution on top of these habits — for the hours when the phone has to be on your body, in your pocket, or next to your kid — that is what Bodywell was built for.

What we decided to do about it

We Cannot Change the Research. But We Can Take a Practical Precaution.

After spending years with this research, I realized something. I do not want to be on a trajectory where every day I am actually a little less healthy, just waiting to see if something serious develops. That is not a plan. That is just hoping for the best.

And I knew that telling people to stop using phones is not a real answer. Your job, your family, your daily life — all of it depends on these devices. Nobody is going back. So we asked a different question: can you reduce how much radiation your body actually absorbs, without changing how you use your phone?

That is what Bodywell's BioChip was built to do. It is a small chip that attaches to the back of your phone. Nothing to charge, nothing to turn on. It does not block the phone's signal or change how the device works.

In FCC-accredited lab testing, it reduced how much RF energy a tissue model absorbed by up to 80%. The phone kept working normally. The body just absorbed less.

Think of it this way. If someone is afraid of seasickness before a cruise, you give them a patch. Seven days on the ocean, they do not feel anything. They come back and say, "What you gave me didn't work — I didn't feel anything." No. That is exactly what prevention looks like. The patch did not change the waves. It did not change the wind rocking the boat. It just changed how the body responded. Bodywell works in a very similar way.

We have put the technology through years of independent testing — SAR absorption, thermal imaging, brainwave analysis, and cellular-level pH studies. A 7-member Scientific Advisory Board of PhDs, MDs, and university professors has reviewed every finding.

I cannot undo what happened to the families who shared their stories. But I can make sure that the families who watch those videos have something real they can do — not someday, right now, on every device in their home.
